Honda Tohru desu!
Her name is Honda Tohru, a very naive and simple girl with very simple dreams. The story starts with her standing beside a small tent, which happened to be her home since her mother died about two months before the story starts.
She used to live with her grandfather but opted to live on her own when her grandfather had the house renovated. She didn’t want to be a burden and even has a job after school to pay for her school tuition and needs. Her best friends Uotani,
the blond with the Yankee gangster attitude and Hanajima, the solemn and freaky sidekick, are her protectors. Or at least, they consider themselves as Tohru’s protectors against students who pick on Tohru, but more on that later.
The story continues when Tohru discovers a house on her way to school. She noticed a row of designed Chinese zodiac eggs left outside. Upon admiring the eggs, a voice got her attention. It was the ownder of house, Shigure Souma. And with him lived
Yuki Souma, Tohru’s classmate, whom everyone considers as the “Prince”. Yuki Souma is a popular student in their school and even has his own fansclub (though I’m not sure if he pays close to attention about it). Yuki suggested that he and Tohru
go to school together.
At school, Tohru is being harassed by some of the “Yuki Fans Club” members but were driven off by Hanajima’s -beep beep- threats. According to Uotani, Tohru is a very a very sweet girl, since Tohru never gets into fights and is often seem smiling.
After her after-school work, Tohru develops a slight fever and she was seen by Shigure and Yuki as she was coming out of her tent on her way to the creek to wash her face. Shigure and Yuki took Tohru to their home and there Tohru’s fever got worse.
Before Souma’s could give her some medicine, they heard the howl of dogs outside. Shigure stated that a landslide occurred somewhere near the tent. Tohru was frantic.
When they went back to her tent, what Shigure said proved to be true. Tohru started digging saying she has to get her mother or she might not be able to breath (in truth Tohru was talking about her mother’s picture). Her fever got worse. She fainted.
Back at the Souma’s place, Tohru was resting and Shigure looked after her. Tohru was talking in her sleep saying she lost her home again. Shigure asked if it was painful. She said she knew of more painful things and explained what happened before her mother died.
She explained her dream to finish high school since was also her mother’s dream. She vowed that she wouldn’t lose to a fever. She drifted off to sleep. Shigure and Yuki heard her and admired her very much for her courage. Yuki went out again to retrieve Tohru’s
things from the landslide.
The next morning, Tohru woke up and was invited by Shigure and Yuki to stay at their house. Tohru wanted to reject the offer saying it was too kind of them but the Souma’s insisted. When Tohru asked what she could do in payment of their kindness, Shigure suggested
she could do the household chores since both he and Yuki are extremely bad at it.
When Yuki showed Tohru her room, the ceiling gave way to an orange-haired guy of their same age. The newcomer is Kyo, another member of the Souma’s. The newcomer instantly invited Yuki to a fight. Tohru, being her peacemaking attitude, decided to stop them before anyone gets hurt.
She took a step forward to intervene but tripped and stumbled upon Kyo. Upon physical contact, Kyo transformed into an orange cat. Tohru thought she was getting delirious and got very dizzy and then stumbled to Yuki and Shigure, who just entered the room. And the both transformed
to animals, Shigure into a dog, Yuki into a mouse.
And this was only just the beginning…
